Studies on the Physiology of Bolting and Flowering in Raphanus sativus L.

Abstract
Fourteen radish cultivars belonging to different ecological type were used to investigate the optimal temperature and inheritance of vernalization, flower stalk length, and days to anthesis. The results obtained are as follows:
1. Of North Chinese radishes, `Yonghyen¢¥ exhibited sensitive response at 6¡É vernalization temperature, `Altari¢¥ and `Cheongpihongsim¢¥ at 2¡8¡É, `Joongkukcheongpi¢¥ and `Jinjoodaepyeong¢¥ at 2¡10¡É, and `Euseongbancheong¢¥ and `Daelykhongwhoan¢¥ at 2¡12¡É.
2. In South Chinese type, `Daemaewhoa¢¥ was the most sensitive to all the ranges of vernalization temperature among the cultivars used for this trial, especially at 4¡É. `Minongjoseang¢¥ showed sensitive response at 4¡6¡É vernalization temperature, `Kungjungchongtae¢¥ at 2¡8¡É, `Baeksukungjung¢¥ at 6¡É.
3. Of European type, `Sax¢¥ and `Cherry Bell¢¥ were sensitive to the vernalization temperature of 10¡É and `Comet¢¥ to 8¡É.
4. The optimal vernalization temperature of the F, produced by cross between `Daemaewhoa¢¥ of which optimal vernalization temperature was 4¡É and `Baeksukungjung¢¥ which showed sensitive response to 6¡É vernalization temperature was 6¡É.
5. There was a smaller variation in flower stalk length in cultivars of North Chinese and South Chinese ecotype at high growing temperature whereas the length of flower stalk of European ecotype became shortened with the increase in growing temperature.
6. After flower bud emergence, days to anthesis of North Chinese type was shortest followed by South Chinese and European type. Days to anthesis were reduced with the increase in growing temperature for all ecological types.
